What is it?
This viral infection occurs in some tropical and subtropical regions of the world, predominantly transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.
Risk areas
The Chikungunya vaccine is recommended for long term travellers, adventure tourists and travellers visiting friends and family to or living in areas where Chikungunya is prevalent, especially in parts South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Asia.
People are most infectious 1-2 days before the rash appears and until all blisters have formed scabs.
Prevention
Bite avoidance, especially between dusk and dawn, can help reduce the risk of getting Chikungunya.
Vaccine Schedule
There are two licensed Chikungunya vaccines.
IXCHIQ: A live attenuated vaccine suitable for immunocompetent individuals aged 18–59 years. The live vaccine (Ixchiq) has a protection of 98.9% at 28 days after vaccination.
Vimkunya: A virus-like particle vaccine using recombinant DNA technology available for individuals aged 12 years and older
